The Square

WELCOME TO EL ZOCALO

Just as in all Mexico's cities, el Zocalo, or main square, is the seat of civil, religious and government authority. The word Zocalo comes from the time of the Spanish colonial era and means pedestal, as in those days, in the center of every occupied city, it was intended to place a statue of the king of Spain; which in fact was never achieved.

In Acapulco, el Zocalo has become the nucleus for all things Mexican. The main square, surrounded by ancient buildings and beautiful terraces, is a tree-lined space, providing refreshing shade to visitors. Here it is that you'll come across a surrealist mixture of colors, made up of ballons and ice cream sellers, shoe shiners, sellers of folk art, and food such as fried bananas and more, all making for a typical small town atmosphere.

Visit the Cathedral, rebuilt after the 1939 earthquake with oriental and North African influenced designs. Truly an afternoon or evening well spent in getting acquainted with the ways of the people and the culture of Mexico.
