Fort San Deigo

WELCOME TO FUERTE DE SAN DEIGO

Surrounded by a dry moat, the Fort of San Deigo is a bulwark of Acapulco's history, confirming the importance of the port since time immemorial. The present site corresponds to a reconstruction built in 1776, the first was destroyed in an earthquake.

For many years, ships coming from Manila, would anchor in front of the fort; full of precious merchandise which was anxiously awaited in the cities of Mexico, Puebla, Cordoba, Veracruz and of course, in Spain, the final destination of much of the cargo.

The fort is now home of the Acapulco Museum. As well as the history of the fort itself, as can be seen in the collection of rooms, it is also interesting to pay a visit to the chapel and kitchen in the fort; which has been restored to their former state of the time. Worth special mention are the Manila Galleon; Piracy in the Pacific and Commerce with the Orient rooms, full of historical objects.

The Museum is very close to El Zocalo only a few feet from the main boulevard, simply follow the signs. The Fort is open to the public from 10:00 AM until 4:30 PM (dark Monday).
